Female Trinity Of Carnatic Music


The Trinity of Carnatic music refers to the outstanding trio of composer-musicians of Carnatic music. M. S. Subbulakshmi, D. K. Pattammal, and M. L. Vasanthakumari, who are the female Trinity of Carnatic musicians of the 20th century.

M.S. Subbulakshmi

Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi was an Indian Carnatic singer from Tamil Nadu. She is the first Indian musician to receive the Ramon Magsaysay award, often considered Asia's Nobel Prize with the citation reading “Exact purists acknowledge Srimati M. S. Subbulakshmi as the leading exponent of classical and semi-classical songs in the Carnatic tradition of South India.” The Kancheepuram Saree shade named after her as MS Blue.

She was widely honoured, praised and awarded. Some of the popular ones include Padma Bhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Sangeetha Kalanidhi, Ramon Magsaysay award (often considered Asia's Nobel Prize), Padma Vibhushan, Sangeetha Kala Shikhamani by The Indian Fine Arts Society, Chennai, Kalidas Samman, Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration and Bharat Ratna.

M. L. Vasanthakumari

Madras Lalitangi Vasanthakumari was a Carnatic musician and playback singer for film songs in many Indian languages. A prime disciple of G. N. Balasubramaniam, she was the youngest among the established musicians of that era and was the youngest female awarded the Sangita Kalanidhi award. As one of the top-ranking stage artists, MLV was charming, warm, self-restraint and humble.

As well as being a much sought-after playback singer for films, MLV popularised unfamiliar ragas and her Ragam Thanam Pallavis were cerebral. She popularised the compositions of the Haridasas. Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Sangeet Natak Akademi, doctorate degree for her work regarding Purandaradasa's contributions to music, Padma Bhushan (Government of India) and Sangeetha Kala Shikhamani from Indian Fine Arts Society, Chennai.

D. K. Pattammal

Damal Krishnaswamy Pattammal was an Indian Carnatic musician and a playback singer for film songs in Tamil. At ten years she gave her first radio performance, followed by a public concert three years later. She became the first woman to perform the difficult Ragam Thanam Pallavi in concerts. She formed one-third of the 'Female trinity of Carnatic Music' along with M.S. Subbulakshmi and M. L. Vasanthakumari. These pioneering women opened doors for the initiation of women into Carnatic music.

D. K. Pattammal received several awards and titles throughout her career. Most notably these include "Gana Saraswathi" (title), "Sangeetha Sagar Ratna," (title), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Sangeetha Kalanidhi (the highest accolade in Carnatic music), Padma Bhushan (from the Government of India), Sangeetha Kala Shikhamani by The Indian Fine Arts Society, Chennai, Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi, Padma Vibhushan (India's second-highest civilian honour) and "Sangeeta Saraswathi".
