How to Teach Music to the Hearing Impaired Child?

“Hearing impairment is not an external weakness, but an internal strength from hearing discouragement”. Whom do you think this info was quoted? Any idea? Don't break your head. It's by me!

To write a quote we need not be a famous person. Conveying the info is necessary. We all have a habit of scolding others by mentioning, ”Can't you hear?”. But hearing-impaired children have only desire in life is “I also want to hear.” Especially music.

Know the Source

There is one kind of people who can help these children. Are you thinking that is you? If you are a teacher then you are correct. Teachers are the source to fulfil the desire of hearing-impaired children. If you see famous people with hearing loss like PETE TOWNSHEND - MUSICIAN, BRIAN WILSON - MUSICIAN, BARBRA STREISAND - MUSICIAN/ACTRESS, HUEY LEWIS – MUSICIAN, they are motivated by unique teachers.

Sense the Rhythm

Do you have any friend with hearing impairment? If, you will notice many differences between normal people and them. These children can develop a strong sense of rhythm by using their body percussion like clapping, stomping, snapping, and patting to learn all kinds of songs. It’s okay! Now you don’t stomp. Children can march to the rhythms or feel the vibrations that they memorised by echo learning.

Learn Comfortable to Sing

Like you and me, everybody is different. These children don’t wish others to feel pity upon them because of their defect. Of course! But many want others to feel pity upon them. While learning a song, deaf children will have a sign language interpreter or translator with them most of the time. If the child can’t proceed with their words, they just express it by playing an instrument part or doing the motions.

Recognise the Invisible Power

Many will try to hide their condition because they are terrified that it will keep them from pursuing their desires. You know, I always expect some motivational words from others, even you people also. But it happens the other way round. Likewise, the first step for a teacher is to recognise the societal stigma against hearing loss and a stigma seemingly invisible yet powerful. Praise the child for their strong points on the music, such as musical technique. Have you encouraged anyone?

Face the Challenges

Now you can assign with your student’s hearing challenges in mind as you have recognised them properly. Did you? No? It's okay. See, if they have a low-frequency loss, they may struggle with deep in the bass like powerful and emotionally stormy. If she has a high-frequency loss, she may fight with the vibrations. Even still they decide to study a part that challenges them, you will easily know how to handle it as you know their difficulties may lie. I'm motivating to you, right?! Haha. It's okay.
