Music comes in many different types and styles ranging from traditional rock music to world pop music. While listening, it is easy to grasp. That’s how it is classified. Just take a look!

Overview:

Music is grouped into genres to describe the form, style, a particular set of conventions or traditions of music. From classical to hip-hop, there are countless numbers of genres. New sub-genres are usually based on existing ones and created by mixing or modifying them. The artistic nature of music is that these classifications are often subjective and controversial, and some genres may overlap. There are too many genres to list them all here, but let’s look at the most popular music genres.

Styles of music:

A musical genre is how people describe different styles of music. Some of the most common music genres are Hip hop, jazz, pop, rock, rhythm and blues, soul music, alternative. The Fundamental Music Genre List: Blues, Classical, Country, Electronic, Folk, Jazz, New age, Reggae, Rock. Plus there are several more common music genres. Religious music is also common, such as hymns, choir music and many more.

Classical music:

One of the most important developments of the Classical period is the growth of the public concert. Homophony music in which melody and accompaniment are distinct and they dominated the Classical style and new forms of composition were developed to accommodate the transformation. Famous composers like Mozart wrote classical music. Classical music is often performed by an orchestra (a large group of musicians), a choir (a group of singers) or a soloist. People usually say a ‘piece’ of classical music rather than a ‘tune’ or ‘song’.

Electronic Dance Music:

Generally referred to as EDM, this form of music is produced by DJs who add dozens of tones to a piece to create unique music. You can hear them in LIVE, depending upon your accessibility for the same. Dance music is the kind of music you usually hear in clubs and bars. It has a strong beat, is often repetitive, and is perfect for dancing too. Like a rock, there are many different styles of dance music. Some are slow, some are fast, but they will all get you feet moving!

Rock Music:

Originated as “Rock & Roll” has been rocking the world since the 1950s. Its loud and strong beats make it popular among the youths. Rock groups use electric guitars, bass and drums create music with a strong beat and lots of energy. Rock places a higher degree of emphasis on musicianship, live performance, and an ideology of authenticity than pop music. This genre slowly mixed with other genres to produce new types. Rock music is famous for being loud!

Metal:

Metal is a genre of rock music that came up during the 1970s. You recognize a music piece is a metal when you either start banging your head with every beat or run away from it. It is characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, thick massive sound and overall loudness. The lyrics may range from plain philosophy to rage against warfare and human ruthlessness and anger.

Jazz:

Jazz is said to be popularized by Afro-Americans. Jazz uses blue notes, syncopation, swing, call and response, polyrhythms, and improvisation. Jazz has a strong rhythm and notes often come between beats. The melody can be invented while it is played and uses a wide range of different scales. It includes a wide range of instruments ranging from Piano to Guitars to Wind Instruments.

Pop Music:

Pop comes from the word "Popular" and thus Pop Music is known to be a genre of popular music. With its roots in the rock & roll style, this form can include any form of music ranging from urban and dance to rock, country and Latin. Instruments highly used are electric guitars, synthesizer drums as well as bass and one can listen to this form of music by listening to songs. The music aims to appeal to a general audience, rather than to a particular sub-culture or ideology. In Pop music, the artistic and technical aspects give lesser attention than the "poppy" feel.

Hip-hop/ Rap:

It is the style that involves the rhyming and rhythmic speech style that we call as rapping. Rap is different to most music genres, in that it is usually spoken, not sung. The words rhyme, like a poem, and fit to the strong beat of the backing music. This grew faster with the advent of technology, including DJ-ing and scratching, beatboxing and easy-to-use looping software.
