Is The Piano A String Or A Percussion Instrument?

In our present music classification system, instruments are split into three categories: wind, strings, and percussion. A variety of keyboard instruments are commonly used for a variety of reasons. The piano has strings, but they are struck by hammers. A digital piano uses electronics to mimic harpsichord plucking.

So, is the piano a percussion or a string instrument? In many cases, it's difficult to tell if an instrument is a stringed or percussion instrument.

String Instrument

String instruments, often known as stringed instruments or chordophones, are musical instruments that generate sound by vibrating strings. A single string or a group of strings can produce music. Plucking or stroking the strings with the hand can also be used to play the strings. String instruments include violins, guitars, harps, cellos, and the piano.

Why Piano is a String Instrument?

A stringed instrument is described as a musical instrument with vibrating strings that produce sound, and a piano's tone is created by the vibration of the strings. The strings are plucked, strummed, hammered, or bowed at the appropriate tension, causing them to vibrate. To tune a piano, the strings behind it must be adjusted as well. The piano, on the other hand, cannot be used as percussion since its sound is produced by strings.

Percussion Instrument

Percussion instruments make music when they are hit, shaken, or scraped. Percussion serves to maintain a piece's rhythm while also contributing color and flavor. Percussion instruments include drum sets, tambourines, rainmakers, maracas, and the piano.

Why Piano is a Percussion Instrument?

Similar to a lyre or harp, the piano contains strings strung between two points. A piano's sound is created by hammers striking the strings. This is a percussion instrument, which is defined as a musical instrument that is played by striking it with the hand or a portable or pedal-operated stick. The piano's fixed strings produce music, but it can't make a sound unless the keys are pushed, which activates a felt-covered hammer within.

So, Piano is...?

Either might be the case. In the Hornbostel-Sachs system of musical instrument categorization, the piano is categorized as a percussive chordophone. The piano's main interface is the keyboard, which may be used to play a number of instruments. The organ, which is primarily a wind instrument, and the harpsichord, which is a plucked-string instrument, are both included on the keyboard. As a result, the piano is today considered both a stringed and percussive instrument.
