Relationship Between Food & Music

Hey! Have you ever taste the same food while listening to different kinds of music? Do you know there is a relationship between food and music? As you all know, most of the biggest restaurants play pleasant music which makes stressfree once you enter inside. What is the secret behind this?

Internal & External Factors

Several studies say that many internal factors influence the way you eat, such as mood, hormones, and external factors like surroundings, usage of smartphones, Tab, etc. One of the main external factors is music. Listening to music while eating is likely to increase your food and drink intake more in quantity. That makes your lunch longer and keeps you to stay more time in a restaurant.

Effect of Brain

Listening to music increases the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain. That leads to the formation of many neurons to glow up in the brain while you listen to music. Similarly, when you have food, you experience the same effect of the increase in the neurotransmitter dopamine along with the formation of neurons to glow up in the brain.

Experimental Proof

Finding people eat faster when they are exposed to speed tempo and conversely, slower music makes us eat slower and drink more. Even the rhythm of chewing gives the rhythm to experience the food better. The study says that, in a restaurant, experiencing food is just 50% remaining 50% depends on the variations in pitch.

The perception of sour, sweet, bitter, and salty tastes experimented by the volunteers by providing four pieces of toffee. Even though all of the toffees were the same, volunteers rated two toffee consumed during a high pitched piano music as sweet while two other pieces eaten with the lower-pitched brass music were perceived as bitter.

Effect on the Taste of Food

Usually, you judge the taste of the food with your four senses like the taste, the view, the smell, and the touch but the fifth sense of hearing is also very important! Moreover, the crunchy taste of chocolatey biscuits, crispy taste of chips makes even better when they are more crunchy and crispy!

The sound you hear changes the perception of the taste of the food you have. Good food can become extraordinary with the appropriate music because music will always make everything better. That’s why there is always music in a successful restaurant cause that leads people to eat much more and willing to pay more in a restaurant.

Emotional Attachment

If you like the music played in a particular place, the level of affection for that place will increase more. The more you like the music, the more you like that place and the more you will remember the place. Inviting the loyal customers will associate with the quality of the restaurant with marvellous music.

The playlist is built according to the menu and the level of formality of the restaurant, to fulfil the expectations of the customers. For instance, a modern menu has to be associated with modern music and a classical menu has to be associated with classical music which makes music more and more energetic as the meal goes on.
