As you are looking for guides to buy drums and percussion, this
will help you to analyze. In this blog, we explain you a brief description of
drums and percussion instruments. Also, you will know how to identify the
damaged parts and how to buy drums and percussion instruments.
Who Am I?
A
percussion instrument is a musical instrument that is sounded by being struck, scraped
by a beater or rubbed by hand or struck against another similar instrument. It
includes the oldest musical instruments following the human voice. They are
classified as tuned/pitched and untuned/unpitched.
Belong To:
A drum is a percussion instrument. A collection of drums and cymbals are called a drum kit or drum set which makes beats of music. Drum kits are used in most types of popular music including rock, jazz, country, blues and many others.
Our Gang:
Every drum kit will include a kick, snare, and hi-hat, are the
backbone of most drum rhythms and are often the first to get upgraded as a
musician progresses.
Snare drum: It is the main drum in a set, mounted on a
stand and positioned between the drummer’s knees, and produces a loud, sharp
sound.
Hit-hat drum: It is a set of two cymbals positioned next to
the snare drum, played by clashing the cymbals together with a foot pedal and
by hitting them with drumsticks.
The bass drum (kick drum): It is the biggest drum in the set and is played with a foot
pedal. It produces the deepest notes, usually the basic downbeats.
Sub-Gang:
Tom (Tom Toms): These drums produce a hollow sound at various
pitches depending on the size, and are of three types: High Tom (smallest tom),
Mid Tom (middle tom) and Floor Tom (largest tom).
Cymbals: Apart from the hit-hat, there are two common cymbals found in
most starter drum kits. Crash and ride cymbals. Crash Cymbals are usually the
loudest cymbals in a kit. Ride Cymbals create a more gentle sound ‘wash’.
Offering Silent Practice:
Electronic drum kits are convenient for small rehearsal spaces like
in a studio setting as their sound is easier to control, and they can produce
hundreds of drum, cymbal and percussion sounds. They do however usually cost
more than starter acoustic drum sets.
Helping Hands:
Sticks: Drumsticks are sized by numbers and letter combinations. The
higher the number, the thinner the stick. Kids and inexperienced learners do
better with wider sticks.
Dampening Devices: Dampening a drumhead slightly can produce a
much better sound. Dampening gels or control rings are both good options.
Additionally, a bass drum kick pad will extend the life of the kick drum head.
Practice Pads: This is for near-silent practice that resembles
playing a real drum. Even professional drummers use them.
Before You Buy Cymbals:
Many starter-level drum kits include a throne, but be sure to
double-check. When you buy cymbals, make sure you check these points.
- Visual Inspection – check whether the same instrument is posted on the ads.
- Key holing – take it out and check the hole and also check there is no crack.
- Edge test – use your finger to move it along the edge of cymbals to check the crack.
- Pinch test – pinch your fingers and rub it across the edge of the cymbals, there may be a chance of finding cracks.
- Engraving – check the cymbals with the company seal with the name printed.
- Barcode test – in some company cymbals, they may paste the barcode sticker. Check out using a barcode scanner.
Before You Buy Drums:
- Visual Inspection – make sure all the kits, lugs, tension rods, memory locks are there. Check out if there are any missing pieces. Also, check Rack rash, Bass drum horas, Uniform Colour and Wrap Condition.
- Tension Rod and Lugs – tune up the head a little bit in the drum and check if whether there are resistance and the rustiness think it’s a bad sign.
- Hoops and Bass drum claws – must be smooth and clean. Use fingers to check out the roughness.
- Bearing Edges – check out every drum and every side like batter side and resonant side.
- Uniform Shell Colour – check out the discolouration of the drums, if any.
